The key to experiencing Moroccan culture is by being open-minded and genuinely interested in learning about it. One of the things that struck me most about Morocco was how hospitable everyone was. From strangers on the street offering directions or assistance to locals welcoming us into their homes for tea, I felt incredibly welcomed everywhere we went.
Living like a local means eating meals at traditional restaurants where you can try dishes such as tagine (a stew made with meat, vegetables, spices and served over couscous), pastilla (a savory pie filled with spiced pigeon or chicken), harira soup (a hearty tomato-based soup often eaten during Ramadan) or msemen bread. We even took part in cooking classes where we learned how to prepare these dishes ourselves!
Another way to experience Moroccan culture is through its vibrant markets or souks. The maze-like alleys are bursting with colorful clothes, aromatic spices, exotic jewelry, intricate carpets- anything your heart desires! Haggling for goods adds fun challenge and excitement too; shopping becomes secondary when bargaining transforms into amusing conversation which eventually leads you up making new friends!
Exploring the blue city of Chefchaouen nestled atop scenic hills proved adventurous as we walked around its steep winding streets lined with quaint shops displaying vibrantly colored wares . And as day ended sultry night sky descended upon tents pitched amidst sand dunes under which delicious aromatic spreads were laid out while musicians played on till late hours.
One personal highlight from my time spent in Morocco was our trip to Marrakech’s Medina square at dusk followed by dinner at Jamaa El Fena overlooking the lively street performers and food stalls. It epitomized Moroccan culture where entertainment, food and family intertwine into a harmonious experience!
Living like a local in Morocco taught me that experiencing different cultures enriches our lives in ways we couldn’t imagine before. Morocco is a country with so much to offer tourists from its architecture to cuisine to tradition; embracing it all takes you on an adventure of endless chances- ones that are worth taking!
